Almost two-thirds of over-55s have witnessed family conflict over inheritance, with Wales well above the national average, research from Mattioli Woods has revealed.

According to the research, 77 per cent of over-55s in Wales have witnessed inheritance-related disputes, compared to a national average of 64 per cent.

Despite that, the survey, conducted by YouGov in June, showed a quarter of over-55s have never openly discussed inheritance with their family.

Mattioli Woods, said the findings pointed to ongoing emotional discomfort, privacy concerns and perceptions that it is “too early” or unnecessary to engage in discussions about inheritance.

Wales was followed by London (72 per cent), the South East (71 per cent) and the South West (70 per cent) as regions where respondents were most likely to have witnessed inheritance-related disputes.

They were followed by Scotland (69 per cent), Yorkshire (64 per cent), the East of England (63 per cent) and the West Midlands (60 per cent), with the East Midlands, the North East and the North West all at 58 per cent.
